Mahalaya Shraddh (महालय श्राद्ध)

In Hindu tradition, Mahalaya Shraddh is a highly important ritual performed for ancestors (Pitru) during Pitru Paksha. It is believed that during this period, ancestors descend to the earthly realm to receive offerings from their descendants.

This ritual is mentioned in texts such as the Garuda Purana, Brahma Purana, and other Dharmashastra scriptures. Across India, it is performed according to regional customs and traditions.

Meaning of Mahalaya Shraddh

  • Mahalaya → Great abode or sacred realm (referring to Pitru Lok)

  • Shraddh → Ritual performed with devotion in memory of ancestors

Thus, Mahalaya Shraddh is a collective Shraddh performed for all ancestors during Pitru Paksha.

Timing of Mahalaya Shraddh

  • Performed during Pitru Paksha (Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapad / Ashwin month).

  • Can be performed on:

    • The death anniversary of a specific ancestor, or

    • Mahalaya Amavasya (All Ancestors’ New Moon Day) – when offerings are made collectively for all ancestors.

Purpose of Mahalaya Shraddh

  • Collective worship and remembrance of all ancestors.

  • Providing peace to ancestors through Pind Daan and Tarpan.

  • Receiving Pitru blessings for the family’s welfare.

  • Removing ancestral displeasure or obstacles caused by Pitru Dosha.

  • Pind Daan – Offering rice balls for all ancestors.

  • Tarpan – Offering water with sesame seeds and chanting Vedic mantras.

  • Shraddh Ceremony – Chanting mantras invoking ancestors from both paternal and maternal lines.

  • Brahmin Bhojan – Feeding Brahmins in honor of ancestors.

  • Daan (Charity) – Donations in the name of ancestors, including:
    Cow donation (Gau Daan), food, clothes, water, lamps, gold, silver, Brahmin meals, Shidha Dakshina, clothing bundles, or Dakshina.
